The 12 Be’s of Being

Be with those who help your being.Hey there everyone!!

While there are many ways to explain what personal development is, I think the fastest way is to say that it is the study of being (ontology).

Yes, we are all human beings.  But how are we “being” now, then, there, or any other place in time?

It usually comes down to language (ordinary words).  What fascinated me is my sudden discovery that our language has dozens of “Be” words–which encapsulate the very profound stages of transformational development within their definitions.

1. “Begin” – Conscious intention is the first step.

Every day is a new beginningAlthough life may just happen, personal development doesn’t.  In fact, life often gives us new experiences of adversity which may cause us to lose hope and eventually be skeptical and cynical.  The answer is to continually begin new practices, to begin new studies, and to begin new adventures.

One of the most empowering beginnings is to begin to see life’s adversities as opportunities for healing.

2. “Behave” – Adjust to your environment.

Your beliefs don't make you a better person, your behavior does. Most things in life have structure and rules.  At times, rules and structures can be upgraded, but it is not wise to try any reconfiguration at the beginning of a long process.

It’s important to learn the system first, and not sabotage a potential route of empowerment (like being rude to allies) due to our brief emotional state.

3. “Believe” – Know that anything is possible.

"Unquestioned beliefs are the real authorities of a culture" – Robert CombsLife teaches us through experience; personal growth comes from the depth of introspection of those experiences.  It’s not so difficult to envision a positive future and set realistic goals that have us feel driven.  What’s more profound is challenging core beliefs that we’ve had for many years in our blind spots, which are inadvertently holding us back.

4. “Beware” – Authentically consider what you are afraid to consider.

The biggest mistake you could ever make is being too afraid to make one.Unfortunately, on our journey there will be many who try to take advantage of us.  That doesn’t mean we need to focus much attention or resources on them.  Know that they exist, and just “be aware” instead of being blindly optimistic.

5. “Behold” – Accept the circumstances of life.

When you finally realize that nothing is permanent in this life, you will become more tolerant, more forgiving, and less judgmental.Mindfulness teaches us to observe as much as possible, without any judgements.  Be present.  Have an attitude of expectation without expecting anything specific.  Trust.  Listen.

Honor the place where people are at when you meet people, and behold the spirit within.  Namaste.

6. “Befriend” – Act the part of your ideal.

Silly friends alone?Being more than often means being in the presence of others.  Treat others as they want to be treated (which is usually in a friendly manner).  Be nice.  Life is always easier with the companionship of a good buddy, no matter how temporary.

7. “Because” – Create the WHY of your existence.

Purpose is understanding why you do what you do. Purpose will wake you up early and keep you up late.We are the one that can be the most at cause for our own life.  What’s our mission, purpose, or dream?  Let’s do things in the world, but more importantly, let’s know why we are doing them.  Because, that gives us more cause to be in life.

8. “Become” – Transform into a new paradigm.

She needed a hero, so that's what she became.Life changes people, inevitably and arbitrarily.  Personal development changes people intentionally and specifically.  Embrace the new paradigm life offers in each moment, with the wonder, openness, and playfulness of a child.

9. “Besides” – Leave room for the unknown.

"Give thanks for unknown blessings already on their way." - Native American ProverbThere’s always an exception and this isn’t the complete picture.  Have flexibility and foster tolerance.  Besides, it’s not the destination that’s important—it’s the journey.

Enjoy smelling the roses.

10. “Belong” – Transcend to conscious co-creation.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." - Margaret MeadWe are social beings, so join groups, clubs, and associations.  Let us integrate into all communities where we find resonance to contribute our unique gifts.

Help others feel a part of your circles so they can feel a sense of belonging.

11.  “Beloved” – Embrace eternal and spiritual guidance.

"Our job is to love others without stopping to inquire whether or not they are worthy." - Thomas MertonDoesn’t it always come down to love?  Do you treat everyone you meet as a person wanting or needing your love?  What if you did?  What if we treat everyone we meet as our “beloved”?

This is not easy to remember nor practice in each and every conversation, yet it is a magnificently beautiful place for consciousness to rest.

12.  Be You – Be Yourself.

The highest form of human intelligence is to observe yourself without judgement. You do this already.  You do it well.  Nobody in the world can be so you.

Now go back to the beginning, and begin.

Let’s love the world together…

Love,
